Notes and Lists: Writing to Remember
A1 · Writing Lab · about 15 minutes
1 · Learn
Notes are writing for real life. A good note has three things: what it is about, the important details (what, how many, when), and your name if someone else will read it. Short phrases are fine in notes — full sentences are not required — but the words must be clear.
Lists work best one item per line, with numbers or quantities where they matter: “2 cartons of milk” is a better note than “milk”, because the shopper does not have to guess.
2 · See an Example
Notes on the Kitchen Table
Shopping — Saturday
2 cartons of milk eggs (12) chicken rice apples — the red ones coffee!!!
Note for Jack: The keys are on the table. Dinner is in the fridge. Back at 8. — Emma
3 · Analyze the Example
- A title orients the reader. “Shopping — Saturday” says what the list is and when it happens.
- Quantities prevent mistakes. “eggs (12)” and “2 cartons” — numbers do the remembering for you.
- Details in parentheses. “apples — the red ones” adds the one detail that matters, fast.
- The note answers where + when. Keys on the table, dinner in the fridge, back at 8 — a complete note in 11 words.
Useful Vocabulary

Notes help you remember.

Common Mistakes
✗ Buy milk eggs bread and cheese and apples and coffee.
✓ Shopping list — one item per line: milk / eggs / bread / cheese / apples / coffee
One item per line is faster to read and to check off.
✗ Note: keys table. dinner fridge. 8 back.
✓ Note: The keys are on the table. Dinner is in the fridge. Back at 8.
Notes can be short, but verbs (are/is) keep them clear.
✗ eggs twelve box
✓ eggs (12) / a box of 12 eggs
Put the number with the item: eggs (12).

5 · Write — Your Task
✍️ Write (1) a shopping list for a weekend breakfast for four people, with quantities; (2) a short note for a family member or roommate about where something is and when you will be back.
Goal: A list of 6–8 items + a 2–3 sentence note · Length: 30–45 words
- One item per line, quantities in parentheses.
- Give the list a title with the day.
- In the note: say where the thing is, and when you are back.
6 · Check — Self-Check
Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.
