Tom & Julia — At the Cafe
Watched it? Now test how much you understood in Stories.
Each lesson has one clear goal, natural examples, and practice with feedback. Pick your level above on Home, or start anywhere.
Goal: introduce yourself and greet people naturally. From 1,000 Sentences Part 1.
Nice to meet you. / How have you been? / Let me introduce myself.
Goal: give your opinion politely and react to others. From Part 3.
In my opinion… / I see your point, but… / That's a good point.
Goal: hear fast, natural movie English and say it yourself.
Goal: fix the mistakes learners make every day — like explain me → explain this to me.
How to use: 1) Listen without reading. 2) Answer the questions. 3) Then open the transcript and check the vocabulary.
Tom: Hi Julia. Nice to see you again. Can I get you a coffee?
Julia: Thanks, Tom. I'd love a cappuccino. And maybe a piece of cake.
Tom: Great idea. I'm hungry too.
get you a coffee = buy/bring you a coffee · I'd love… = a polite, happy "yes" · a piece of cake = one slice (also an idiom: something very easy!)
Watch the first 2 minutes without subtitles, then answer in Tests → Listening quiz. Key idea: native speakers connect words and reduce sounds — training your ear, not just your vocabulary, is the fix.
Explain needs an object + to + person: "Can you explain this word to me?"
Watch the 10-second ShortFun = enjoyable: "The trip was fun." Funny = makes you laugh: "The movie was funny." Something can be fun without being funny!
check in (hotel/flight) · get on / get off (bus, train) · drop off (leave someone somewhere) · pick up (collect) · set off (start a journey)
make a mistake, a decision, progress, money · do homework, business, your best, someone a favour
a piece of cake = very easy · break the ice = start a friendly conversation · under the weather = a little sick · hit the road = leave / start travelling
I'm a team player. / My strength is… / I'm looking for a new challenge. / Thank you for your time.
Learning goal: choose the right tense in conversation. Past Simple = finished time (yesterday, in 2020). Present Perfect = no finished time / result now.
I lost my keys. (finished) · I've lost my keys. (and now I can't get in!) · Have you ever been to London?
Use a/an the first time, for one of many: "I saw a dog." Use the when both people know which one: "The dog was huge." No article for general ideas: "Life is good."
Present continuous for a fixed plan: "My dad is coming home." — it's arranged, it's sure. From our Say It 3 Times lesson.
Before you watch: order (ask for food/drink) · bill/check (the money you pay) · usually (most times)
After you watch — speaking questions: What do you usually order at a cafe? Who do you go with? Describe your favourite cafe in 3 sentences — say them out loud.
Homework (5 minutes): write your own 4-line cafe dialogue, then read it aloud twice.
Read both parts out loud. Then swap roles.
A: Hi! What can I get you today?
B: I'd like a cappuccino, please.
A: Anything to eat?
B: Yes, a piece of cake, please.
A: Good evening. I have a reservation under the name…
B: Welcome! Can I see your ID, please?
A: Of course. Is breakfast included?
Play a line, pause, and copy the speaker exactly — same speed, same music of the voice. Try: "My dad is coming home." ×3.
1. What did you do last weekend?
2. What are you doing tomorrow?
3. Have you ever travelled alone?
Answer each in 3 full sentences — out loud, not in your head!
