My Home and My Town: There Is / There Are
A1 · Writing Lab · about 20 minutes
1 · Learn
To describe a place, English uses “there is” (one thing) and “there are” (two or more): “There is a park near my house.” “There are two bedrooms.” It is the fastest way to paint a picture of a place.
Build your description like a camera: start with the whole place (my town, my apartment), then move to the important parts (the kitchen, the park), then finish with your feeling about it (I like it because…).
2 · See an Example
My Apartment in Denver
I live in a small apartment in Denver. There is a living room, a kitchen, and one bedroom. The kitchen is small, but it has a big window.
Near my apartment, there is a park and a good café. There are many trees in the park. I like my neighborhood because it is quiet and friendly.
3 · Analyze the Example
- There is / there are. “There is a living room” (one), “There are many trees” (many) — the workhorse of description.
- Camera order. Apartment → rooms → neighborhood → feeling. Wide shot first, details after.
- “but” fixes a negative. “The kitchen is small, but it has a big window” — a problem plus a good point sounds balanced and natural.
- “because” gives the reason. “I like my neighborhood because it is quiet” — opinions sound stronger with a reason.

Goal: 6–8 sentences · Length: 55–75 words
- Start wide (town/apartment), then give details.
- Use “there is” for one thing, “there are” for many.
- Finish with “I like … because …”.
6 · Check — Self-Check
Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.
