My Day: Writing About Daily Routines
A1 · Writing Lab · about 20 minutes
1 · Learn
A routine text follows the clock: morning, afternoon, evening, night. Put your sentences in time order and the reader follows your day easily.
Give the time for the important moments: “I get up at 6:30.” Use “at” for clock times (at 7, at noon), and simple linkers — first, then, after that, finally — to connect your sentences.
2 · See an Example
Emma's Day
I get up at 6:30 every morning. First, I take a shower and eat breakfast. Then I walk to work. My work starts at 8:00.
In the evening, I cook dinner and watch TV. I read a book before bed. I go to bed at 10:30.
3 · Analyze the Example
- Time order. Morning → work → evening → bed. The reader never has to jump around the day.
- “at” + clock time. at 6:30, at 8:00, at 10:30 — always “at” for times on the clock.
- First / Then. Two small words that show the order of actions clearly.
- Routine verbs. get up, take a shower, eat breakfast, go to bed — fixed phrases native speakers use every day.
Useful Vocabulary
I get up at six.
He takes a shower before work.
I eat breakfast at home.
I usually walk to work.
She reads before bed.
Useful Expressions
- I get up at …
- First, I …
- Then I …
- In the evening, I …
- I go to bed at …
Common Mistakes
✗ I get up in 6:30.
✓ I get up at 6:30.
Clock times take “at”, not “in”.
✗ I take breakfast at home.
✓ I eat breakfast at home.
The natural verb is “eat breakfast” (or “have breakfast”), not “take”.
✗ He go to work at 8.
✓ He goes to work at 8.
He/she/it needs -s or -es: goes, watches, takes.

5 · Write — Your Task
✍️ Write about your typical day: when you get up, three things you do in the morning, what you do in the afternoon or evening, and when you go to bed.
Goal: 6–8 sentences · Length: 50–70 words
- Write in clock order: morning → evening → night.
- Give real clock times with “at”.
- Use first, then, and in the evening to connect your sentences.
6 · Check — Self-Check
Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.
