Writing About Me: Personal Information
A1 · Writing Lab · about 20 minutes
1 · Learn
Forms, profiles, and first messages all ask for the same information: name, where you are from, where you live, what you do, and a little about your family. Learn to write these six or seven sentences well and you can introduce yourself anywhere.
Use “I am from + country” for where you are from, and “I live in + city” for where you live now. They are different — many people are from one place and live in another.
2 · See an Example
About Me — Julia
My name is Julia Torres. I am from Texas, and I live in Houston. I am a teacher. I work at a school near my home.
I have one brother and one sister. My brother is a student. In my free time, I read books and cook dinner for my family.
3 · Analyze the Example
- Name first. “My name is Julia Torres.” One short sentence, only the facts.
- From vs. live in. “I am from Texas, and I live in Houston.” From = origin; live in = home now.
- Job in one sentence. “I am a teacher.” Remember the word “a” before a job: a teacher, a driver, an engineer.
- One personal detail at the end. Free time and family make the profile human, not just a form.
Useful Vocabulary
I am from Florida.
I live in Denver.
Her job is in a hospital.
In my free time, I play guitar.
I have a big family.
Useful Expressions
- My name is …
- I am from …
- I live in …
- I am a / an …
- In my free time, I …
Common Mistakes
✗ I am teacher.
✓ I am a teacher.
Jobs need “a” (or “an”): a teacher, an engineer.
✗ I live from Chicago.
✓ I am from Chicago. / I live in Chicago.
From goes with “I am”, in goes with “live”: I live in Chicago.
✗ My name is from Anna.
✓ My name is Anna.
“My name is” takes only the name — no “from”.

5 · Write — Your Task
✍️ Write your own personal profile: your name, where you are from, where you live, your job or studies, one line about your family, and one thing you do in your free time.
Goal: 6–7 sentences · Length: 45–65 words
- Follow the model's order: name → from → live → job → family → free time.
- Use “a” or “an” before your job.
- Check every capital letter: names, cities, and countries need them.
6 · Check — Self-Check
Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.
