Step 59: In My Opinion

Discussions — Agreeing and disagreeing politely

📖 Read — The Great Phone Debate

In class today, Miss Taylor started a debate: Should students use phones at school? Ethan went first. “In my opinion, phones help us learn. We can translate words and watch lessons.”

Sophia nodded. “I agree with Ethan. Phones are tools.” But Jack had a different view. “I see your point, but phones also steal our attention. In my view, we should use them only in English class.” Miss Taylor smiled. “Good debate! Remember: there's no 'wrong side' when you explain your reasons politely. Sometimes, friends agree to disagree — and that's fine.”

🎧 Say it with me

In my opinion, phones can help us learn. I agree with Emma, but I see Jack’s point too — sometimes we should agree to disagree.

🎤 Your turn to speak

Run a mini-debate alone: give your opinion on school phones (or homework), agree with one imaginary person, and politely disagree with another using 'I see your point, but…'.

Say it out loud three times. Even better: record it on your phone and listen — your ear is your best teacher.

✍️ Your turn to write

Write 5 sentences about this topic: 'Is homework a good thing?' Use In my opinion, I agree, I see your point but, and because.

See a model answer

In my opinion, homework is useful because it helps us practice. I agree with my teacher that a little homework every day is good. I see the students' point, but three hours is too much. A good school gives one hour, not five. That's my view!
