Step 53: Before That Happened…

Earlier past — Past perfect (first steps)

📖 Read — Ethan's Terrible Morning

This morning was a disaster for Ethan. When he arrived at school, the English class had already started. He was late because he had missed the bus — he had overslept by twenty minutes!

At lunch, things got worse. He reached for his money, but his pocket was empty. He realized he had left his wallet on the kitchen table. Luckily, Lily lent him five dollars. “Phew,” he said. “I arrived in the nick of time — the cafeteria was closing!”

🧩 Grammar — Past Perfect — The Earlier Past

When a story has TWO past actions, use the past perfect (had + past participle) for the one that happened FIRST: When I arrived (second), the class had already started (first). It works beautifully with when, before, after, and by the time, and after 'because' to explain a past situation: I was late because I had missed the bus.

had + participle = the EARLIER action · past simple = the later one
  • When we got home, the movie had already finished.
  • She was hungry because she had skipped breakfast.
  • After I had locked the door, I left.
  • By the time he arrived, we had eaten everything.

🏗️ Key structures

  • When I arrived, ___ had already ___ — When I arrived, the game had already started.
  • I was ___ because I had ___ — I was tired because I had slept badly.
  • After I had ___, I ___ — After I had finished my homework, I went out.

Say it out loud three times. Even better: record it on your phone and listen — your ear is your best teacher.

✍️ Your turn to write

Write 5 sentences about a day when you were late. Use the past perfect three times (had started, had left, had forgotten…).
