Step 52: The Interrupted Action

Story drama — Past simple vs past continuous

📖 Read — A Very Bad Evening in the Kitchen

Last night, everything went wrong in Ethan's kitchen. He was cooking soup when the phone rang. While he was talking to Tom, the soup burned! Black smoke filled the kitchen.

Later, while he was cleaning the floor, he dropped a glass. And when he was carrying the trash out, he spilled water on his shoes! “What a night,” he laughed. His sister Lily smiled: “Well — out of the blue, bad evenings happen. Tomorrow will be better!”

🧩 Grammar — Past Continuous + Past Simple — The Interruption

In stories, a LONG action (past continuous) is often interrupted by a SHORT, sudden action (past simple): I was cooking when the phone rang. Use when before the short action and while before the long one: While I was cooking, the phone rang. Think of it as a long road (continuous) and a lightning strike (simple)!

was/were + -ing … when + past simple ⚡ · While + continuous, past simple
  • She was reading when the lights went out.
  • While we were driving, it started to snow.
  • He was sleeping when the alarm rang.
  • I hurt my leg while I was playing soccer.
