The Job Interview: a Full Simulation

A complete interview arc with Ms. Grant, hiring manager, and David, a marketing candidate: arrival, the résumé walk-through, a curveball question, and the candidate's own questions at the end — the part candidates forget and interviewers remember. · B2 · Role-Play

How to practice: first listen to the whole dialogue. Then play BOTH roles out loud — or take one role and answer the other from memory. When it flows, record the full dialogue below.

Ms. Grant David, welcome. Thanks for coming in. Did you find us okay?

David Easily, thanks — your directions were perfect. It's great to be here.

Ms. Grant Good. So, walk me through your experience — what should I know that isn't on the résumé?

David The résumé shows three years in content marketing. What it doesn't show is the campaign last spring: our budget was cut mid-project, so we rebuilt it around customer stories instead of ads — and engagement went UP forty percent. Constraints taught me more than the big budgets did.

Ms. Grant Interesting. Tell me — what's a piece of criticism you've received that stung, but was right?

David That I fall in love with my first idea. My manager said it in a review and it stung because it was true. Now I force myself to draft three openings for anything important, and I pick the second one embarrassingly often.

Ms. Grant Ha — honest answer. What questions do you have for me?

David Two, if that's okay. What does success look like in this role in the first ninety days? And what happened to the last person in it — promoted, I hope?

Ms. Grant Promoted, yes — she's my boss now, technically. Ninety days: learn our audience, ship one campaign, tell me what's broken. In that order.

David That's a clear brief. Thank you — honestly, this conversation made me want the job more, not less.

Ms. Grant Good sign. We'll be in touch by Friday, either way.

🎙 Practice recorder

Record yourself, play it back, and compare with the model. Recordings stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Your task

Run this interview twice: once as the interviewer (read Ms. Grant — borrow her question style), once as David, then a THIRD time as yourself in your own field: walk-through, one curveball ('a criticism that stung but was right'), and two questions YOU ask them. If you can't ask questions, you're not ready.
