Contrastive Stress — Stress IS the Meaning

At C1, stress stops being decoration and becomes vocabulary. Moving the main stress to a different word corrects, insists, or accuses — without changing a single word. 'I didn't say HE took it' has seven words, and stressing each one produces seven different meanings. ('I wanted the RED one' vs 'I WANTED the red one' — one stress, new message)

Intonation & Attitude — Polite, Firm, Warm, Doubtful

Native listeners judge your attitude from melody before they process your words. 'Okay.' can be warm agreement, cold dismissal, or open doubt. At C1 you learn to hear — and choose — those melodies: certainty falls cleanly, uncertainty hovers, politeness softens the edges, and firm disagreement stays level and unhurried. (The same words, four attitudes — melody is the message)

Fast-Speech Reductions — didja, whaddaya, jeet

At full speed, Americans compress whole phrases into single beats: 'Did you…?' becomes 'Didja…?', 'What do you want?' becomes 'Whaddaya want?', and 'Did you eat yet?' becomes the famous 'Jeet yet?'. Your goal at C1: understand every one instantly. Producing them is optional, casual-only seasoning. (The deep end of connected speech — understand everything, produce carefully)

Discourse Prosody — Sounding Confident in Long Turns

In presentations, interviews, and meetings, pronunciation scales up: you must organize MINUTES of speech so listeners can follow. Discourse prosody is the architecture — chunking into thought groups, stressing new information, dropping pitch to close a point, and lifting it to open the next one. (Chunking, signposting, and pitch architecture for talks and interviews)

The Shadowing Studio — Train Like an Interpreter

Shadowing is the closest thing pronunciation training has to a full workout: you speak WITH the model voice, half a second behind it, copying its rhythm, reductions, linking, and melody exactly. Interpreters train this way. Fifteen focused minutes beats an hour of casual repetition. (The complete protocol: blind listen → mark → shadow ×3 → hide text → record & check)
