Advanced Linking — Glides, Merges & Smooth Chains

B2 · Linking · go on → go-won · I agree → I-yagree · next day → nex-day

Beyond consonant-to-vowel linking lies the second layer: when two VOWELS meet across words, Americans insert a tiny glide — /w/ after 'oo/oh' sounds, /j/ after 'ee/ay' sounds — and heavy consonant clusters simplify. This is what makes fast speech sound like one long word.

Step 1 — Notice

Glide rule: after a vowel made with round lips (go, do, how), the bridge is a mini /w/: 'go on' → 'go-WON', 'do it' → 'do-WIT'. After a 'smiling' vowel (see, say, I), the bridge is a mini /j/ (the 'y' sound): 'I agree' → 'I-YAgree', 'say it' → 'say-YIT'. Clusters simplify too: 'next day' loses its /t/ ('nex-day'), 'old friend' compresses. None of this is careless — it follows exact patterns.

Step 2 — Listen

AI-generated American voice. Natural first, then slow. Listen as many times as you need.

Go on, please.

go-WON — the /w/ bridge.

I agree with you.

I-YAgree — the /j/ bridge.

Just do it.

do-WIT — /w/ again.

Say it again, please.

say-YIT — /j/ bridge, then linking.

Step 3 — Notice the Difference

Careful

go — on (gap between vowels)

→

Natural American

go-won

A whisper of /w/ fills the gap.

Careful

I — agree

→

Natural American

I-yagree

A whisper of /j/ ('y') fills this gap.

Careful

next — day

→

Natural American

nex-day

/t/ drops before the consonant — but keep it before vowels: 'next up' keeps the T (linked).

Step 4 — Repeat & Record

Say each model out loud, right after the voice. Then record yourself saying the target line: Go on, please.

🎙 Practice recorder

Record yourself, play it back, and compare with the model. Recordings stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Step 5 — Compare & Self-Check

Play your recording from Step 4. Then play the model again. No scores — just honest ears. Tick what you truly did:

Step 6 — Shadow

The text starts hidden. Listen first, then reveal it, then speak with the voice — same rhythm, half a second behind.

Go on — I agree, just do it your way.
