Nominalization and Academic Register: The Power and the Price

1 · Learn
Nominalization turns verbs and adjectives into nouns: decide → a decision, fail → failure, is stable → stability. It is the engine of academic and bureaucratic register, and like every engine it has a proper load. Used well, it compresses a whole previous argument into one noun (“the collapse”) so the next sentence can build on it, and it lets writers discuss processes without naming actors where actors genuinely don't matter.
Used badly — the bureaucratic default — it deletes responsibility: “A decision was taken regarding the implementation of reductions” contains no human being, no verb with blood in it, and no one to blame. The C1 skill is a dial, not a ban: nominalize to PACKAGE (looking backward at established facts), verbalize to ACT (announcing, accusing, deciding, promising).
2 · See an Example
The Same Event, Two Registers
VERBAL (a news lead): “The city council voted last night to close two libraries, after residents packed the chamber to protest. The mayor defended the cuts, blaming the deficit.”
NOMINALIZED (the council's own minutes): “The closure of two library facilities was approved following public consultation. The justification offered was the necessity of deficit reduction.”
THIRD VERSION (the analyst's): “The council's decision to close two libraries — taken against visible public opposition, and justified by a deficit the same budget partly creates through tax abatements — signals a revaluation of what the city believes a library is for.”
Notice the analyst keeps the nominalizations that package (“closure”, “decision”) but restores the actors the minutes erased (the council decides; residents oppose; the budget creates). That selective restoration IS register control: formality without amnesia.
3 · Analyze the Example
- What nominalization buys. Compression and abstraction: “the necessity of deficit reduction” packages a whole argument into a noun phrase the next clause can lean on.
- What it costs. Actors vanish (“was approved” — by whom?), verbs bleed out (voted → the closure), and time dissolves. The minutes are not lying; they are declining to remember.
- The analyst's selective restoration. Keep the packaging nouns; restore the agents where responsibility lives. The result is formal AND honest — the combination bureaucracies fear most.
- Register as a choice with a politics. Every register decision decides who can be blamed, thanked, or found. Stylistic advice at C1 is therefore ethical advice wearing a grammar coat.
Useful Vocabulary
Nominalization raises formality and lowers agency.
Tax abatements for new firms.
Nominalization packages the previous sentence.
Raise the register for the board paper.
Formality without amnesia is the goal.
Useful Expressions
- The closure / decision / implementation of …
- … was approved following …
- … justified by a … the same … partly creates …
- signals a revaluation of …
- restores the actors
Common Mistakes
✗ Zombie-noun pileup: “The implementation of the optimization of the distribution of resources was effectuated.”
✓ “The warehouse team redistributed the stock.” (Or, packaging honestly: “The redistribution of stock was completed on Tuesday — by the warehouse team, ahead of schedule.”)
When every verb is buried in a noun, sentences need fake verbs (was effectuated) to move at all. One zombie noun is a tool; five is a graveyard.
✗ Nominalizing to dodge blame in your OWN bad news: “Mistakes were made in the handling of your application.”
✓ “We made mistakes with your application. I am sorry, and here is what happens next.”
Readers decode “mistakes were made” instantly — as an apology with the apologizer removed. Restoring the actor is the apology.
✗ De-nominalizing where packaging is needed: “After the army took the bridge and the generals decided to stop, which we discussed for three pages, …”
✓ “After the capture of the bridge and the decision to halt — developments detailed above — …”
Looking backward, nominalization is mercy: it lets a text build on its own past without re-performing it. Refusing it there is not honesty; it is clutter.
4 · Guided Practice
Unwind it (restore actors and verbs): “The cessation of negotiations was announced following the rejection of the proposal.”
See a model answer
Example: “The talks stopped: the union announced it was walking out after the company rejected its proposal.” — actors restored: union, company.
Package it (compress the old news into nouns for the next move): “We have shown that the river rose, the levee broke, and the lower town flooded in one night. This…”
See a model answer
Example: “This single night's rise, breach, and flood — the fastest in the records — reset every assumption the town's planning rested on.”
Judge the register: a condolence letter that reads “The management wishes to express the sentiment of sorrow occasioned by the bereavement of your family.”

Catastrophically wrong register: nominalized condolence erases the mourner and the mourned. → “We were so sorry to hear about your father. Everyone in the office is thinking of you.”
5 · Write — Your Task
✍️ Take one event and write it three ways (60–80 words each): (1) a verbal news lead; (2) a fully nominalized official record; (3) an analyst's version that packages with nouns but restores actors where responsibility lives. Add two lines explaining what each register gains and hides.
Goal: 3 versions + commentary · Length: 220–280 words total
- In version 2, hunt down and bury every human subject — feel what the genre does.
- In version 3, underline each restoration: which actor did you resurrect, and why that one?
- Formal ≠ nominalized: the analyst's version should prove both can coexist.
6 · Check — Self-Check
Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.
Read a model answer for the task
(1) NEWS: “Fire crews rescued six residents from the Maple Street apartments last night after a kitchen fire spread to the third floor. Nobody was seriously hurt.” (2) OFFICIAL: “The evacuation of six residents was effected following the propagation of a localized ignition event. No serious casualties were sustained.” (3) ANALYST: “The fire crew's evacuation of six residents — from a building whose alarm inspection was postponed twice this year by the management company — ended without serious injury, though 'without injury' is doing heavy work: two families are in a motel, and the question of the alarms now has names attached to it.” Commentary: the official record gains neutrality and loses every accountable person; the analyst keeps the record's compression but returns the postponed inspections — and their owner — to the sentence.
7 · Improve & Rewrite
Weak version — rewrite it in your notebook first, then compare:
The decision was made by the committee for the postponement of the meeting due to the consideration of the budget and the absence of several members was also a factor in the determination.
See an improved version
The committee postponed the meeting. It wanted the full budget in front of it, and several members were away — a quorum in name only. (If the packaging is needed for what follows: “The postponement, forced by an incomplete budget and a thin bench, pushed the decision into the new fiscal year.”)
