Cohesion and Coherence: Making Texts Flow and Make Sense

🎯 Objective. Diagnose and repair the two kinds of flow: cohesion (the visible stitches: referencing, substitution, linking) and coherence (the invisible logic: whether the ideas actually follow).

1 · Learn

A text can be perfectly stitched and still be nonsense — that is the difference between cohesion and coherence. COHESION is mechanical: pronouns that clearly point (it, this, which), repetition of key words, substitution (one, do so), and linking words used truthfully. COHERENCE is logical: each sentence must be the sentence the reader expects next, given the plan of the paragraph.

Most flow problems are coherence problems wearing a cohesion costume. Writers sprinkle “moreover” over ideas that do not follow, and the text reads like a corridor of doors opening onto different buildings. Fix the order and the logic first; the stitches are the last five percent.

2 · See an Example

Before → After (a repair, annotated)

BEFORE: “Remote work is popular nowadays. Many companies offer it. Moreover, employees save money on travel. However, offices are nice places. Furthermore, my uncle works in an office. In conclusion, remote work is a trend.”

AFTER: “Remote work survives because it pays both sides of the contract. Companies shed office costs; employees recover the commute — for the average worker, nearly an hour a day. That recovered hour is the real salary increase of the decade, and it explains why returning to the office feels, to many, like a pay cut. Offices still matter — for training, for trust, for the accidents of corridor conversation. But they now have to EARN their attendance, because the alternative has finally shown its price tag: zero, and rising.”

WHAT CHANGED: A claim replaced a topic announcement; “moreover/however” were deleted where the logic did not support them; the pronoun chain (it → that recovered hour → it) now points at named things; and the conclusion was earned by the commute argument instead of declared.

3 · Analyze the Example

Useful Vocabulary

cohesion — the visible connections between sentences (pronouns, linkers, repetition)

Pronouns create cohesion.

coherence — the logical sense that makes a text feel inevitable

The argument lacks coherence.

reference chain — the sequence of words pointing to the same thing (the commute → it → that hour)

Keep reference chains unambiguous.

shed — to get rid of something unwanted

Companies shed office costs.

sprinkle — to scatter small amounts over something

Don't sprinkle linkers at random.

Useful Expressions

Common Mistakes

✗ “He told his manager that he had fired him because he was angry.”

✓ “He told his manager, 'You are fired,' in a voice shaking with anger.” or restructure until each pronoun has ONE possible owner.

Three he's, three hims, zero clarity. When a pronoun can point two ways, rewrite — punctuation cannot save it.

✗ Linker confetti: “Firstly, dogs are loyal. Moreover, they are friendly. However, they need walks. Furthermore, in conclusion, dogs are pets.”

✓ “Dogs are loyal and friendly, and they repay both with a daily demand: walks. That demand is the price of the loyalty — which is exactly why dog people trust it.”

Five linkers, zero logic. “However” with no contrast and “In conclusion” with no argument are flow's counterfeit money.

✗ Topic drift: paragraph opens on city rents, visits a memory of a childhood home, discusses mortgages, ends on gardening.

✓ One paragraph, one controlling idea. Anything beloved that does not serve it gets its own paragraph — or the knife.

Coherence is mostly loyalty: to the paragraph's promise. Drift is usually good material in the wrong home.

4 · Guided Practice

  1. Repair the reference chain: “The committee rejected the proposal because it was too expensive and it had no support.” (who/what is each 'it'?)

    See a model answer

Rewrite: “The committee rejected the proposal for two reasons: its cost, and its lack of support.” — the pronoun is replaced by clear nouns.

  2. Order for coherence: (a) This saves the average worker an hour a day. (b) Remote work endures because it pays both sides. (c) Companies also shed office costs. (d) An hour a day is the real raise of the decade.

    See a model answer

    b → c → a → d: claim, company side, worker side, verdict-echo.

  3. Delete the lying linker: “She studied medicine for six years. However, she became a doctor.”

    See a model answer

“However” claims a contrast that does not exist. → “After six years of medicine, she became a doctor.” (sequence, not contrast).

5 · Write — Your Task

✍️ Take a page of your own old writing (or write a deliberately average paragraph): first repair its COHERENCE (state the controlling idea, cut or move drift, order the ideas), then repair its COHESION (unambiguous pronouns, truthful linkers only, key-word echoes). Submit both versions with a 3-line annotation of what changed.

Goal: Original + repaired version + annotation · Length: 250–330 words total

  • Diagnose before editing: read and ask of each sentence “why are YOU here, after THAT?”
  • Underline every it/this/which and draw its arrow to its owner.
  • Delete every linker, then re-add only the ones the logic demands.

6 · Check — Self-Check

Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.

Read a model answer for the task

BEFORE: “Libraries are important. They have many books. Moreover, the internet is popular now. However, old people like libraries. My grandmother goes there. In conclusion, libraries are good.” AFTER: “The library's real product is not books; it is unbought time and space. Everything else in public life now charges by the hour or the cup, but the library lets a student, a pensioner, and a new father sit all day for nothing. That free stillness is why the internet did not kill it: the internet sells attention, and the library is where attention goes to recover. My grandmother goes every Tuesday. She is not behind the times; she is guarding one of the last rooms where nobody wants her money.” ANNOTATION: Claim replaced announcement; false linkers (“moreover”, “however”) removed; the grandmother moved from random fact to closing evidence.

7 · Improve & Rewrite

Weak version — rewrite it in your notebook first, then compare:

Firstly, exercise is good for the heart. Furthermore, it is good for sleep. However, many people do not exercise. Moreover, gyms can be expensive. In conclusion, exercise is healthy and people should do it.

See an improved version

Exercise persuades the body in a strict order, and the order is the argument. The heart adapts first — within weeks it pumps more per beat, and stairs stop negotiating. Sleep follows, because a tired body defends its nights better than a restless one. Mood arrives last and stays longest, which is why people who begin for their heart continue for their heads. Gyms, notably, are optional in this story: the body cannot tell a membership from a hillside. What it cannot forgive is absence — and absence, unlike money, is the one price everyone pays in the same currency.
