🎯 Objective. Write a complete short paragraph: a topic sentence that names the idea, three or four supporting sentences, and a closing line.

1 · Learn

A paragraph is not just “some sentences together” — it is one idea, built like a small house. The topic sentence is the roof: it tells the reader the whole idea in one line. The sentences under it give details, examples, and reasons. A short closing line lands the idea.

Keep every sentence inside the topic. If a sentence does not support the topic sentence, it belongs in a different paragraph — or nowhere. That one rule fixes most confusing paragraphs.

2 · See an Example

Why I Love My Morning Walk

My morning walk is the best part of my day. I walk in the park near my house for thirty minutes. The air is fresh, and the park is quiet at that time. I listen to the birds and watch people walk their dogs. This short walk gives me energy and a clear head for work.

3 · Analyze the Example

Useful Vocabulary

topic sentence — the sentence that states the paragraph's main idea

A good topic sentence is short and clear.

support — to give details or reasons for an idea

Examples support your point.

detail — a small, specific piece of information

Add one detail: a time, a place, a number.

fresh — clean and cool (air); new and healthy (food)

The morning air is fresh.

energy — the power to be active and do things

Coffee gives me energy.

Useful Expressions

Common Mistakes

✗ My morning walk is great. Also, my job is difficult, and my brother lives in Texas. The park is nice.

✓ My morning walk is the best part of my day. The park is quiet, the air is fresh, and I return home with energy.

Every sentence must support the topic sentence. The job and the brother belong in other paragraphs.

✗ Dogs are cute. I like dogs. Dogs are friendly.

✓ Dogs make wonderful pets because they are friendly, loyal, and always happy to see you.

Three tiny sentences repeat one idea. One topic sentence plus details is stronger.

✗ In this paragraph I will write about my hobby.

✓ My hobby, photography, helps me see the world slowly.

Announcing your topic is weak. State the idea itself.

4 · Guided Practice

  1. Choose the best topic sentence for a paragraph about learning English: (a) English is a language. (b) Learning English changed my work life. (c) I will write about English.

    See a model answer

    (b) — it makes a claim the paragraph can prove. (a) is a fact with nowhere to go; (c) only announces.

  2. Cross out the sentence that does not belong: “My bike is perfect for the city. It is light and fast. Bikes are popular in many countries. I ride it to work in ten minutes.”

“Bikes are popular in many countries” — it leaves the topic (MY bike).

  3. Write a closing line for a paragraph whose topic sentence is “Cooking at home saves money.”

Example: “For my family, one week of home cooking saves almost a hundred dollars.”

5 · Write — Your Task

✍️ Write one paragraph about something small that makes your life better — a habit, a place, a person, or an object. Start with a strong topic sentence, add three supporting sentences, and close with the payoff.

Goal: 5–6 sentences in ONE paragraph · Length: 70–100 words

  • Write the topic sentence first and keep it in front of you.
  • Every sentence must answer: “How does this support my topic?”
  • End with the benefit or feeling — the payoff.

6 · Check — Self-Check

Work through your checklist honestly, then run the Self-Check. It counts words and sentences and spots mechanical points — it does not grade your English. You are the editor.

Read a model answer for the task

My grandmother's kitchen is my favorite place in the world. Something is always cooking there, and the whole house smells of bread and soup. She sits me down with a plate before I can say hello. We talk about my week while she works, and her advice is always simple and right. That kitchen is where my family becomes a family.

7 · Improve & Rewrite

Weak version — rewrite it in your notebook first, then compare:

I like the beach. The beach is nice. Many people go to the beach. My friend has a car. The water is blue.

See an improved version

The beach near my town is my favorite place to relax. The water is blue and warm, and the sand is soft under my feet. I swim, read, and forget my phone for a few hours. Every visit gives me back my energy.
