Interview: Part-Time Jobs

Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.

Opinion

Question 1

Some people say students should not work part-time while studying because it distracts them from their education. Do you agree?

Useful phrases: I partly disagree, because... ยท Of course, if... ยท So the real issue is...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I partly disagree, because a part-time job can actually support a student's education when the hours are reasonable. Working ten or twelve hours a week teaches time management and responsibility, and the income reduces financial stress. Of course, if a job takes twenty or thirty hours, grades will suffer. So the real issue isn't working itself; it's the number of hours and how students balance them.

Experience

Question 2

Tell me about a part-time job you have had, or one you would like to have. What makes it valuable?

Useful phrases: It taught me much more than... ยท For instance, ... ยท Ever since then, ...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I worked in a small cafรฉ near my campus for about a year, and it taught me much more than how to make coffee. Dealing with impatient customers, for instance, made me much more patient and professional. I also learned to stay calm during busy hours and to organize tasks quickly. Those skills sound simple, but they've honestly helped me in group projects and presentations ever since.

Preference

Question 3

If you could choose any part-time job as a student, what would you choose and why?

Useful phrases: I'd choose to work as... ยท For example, ... ยท In addition, ...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I'd choose to work as a research assistant or a tutor, because those jobs build skills that matter later. Tutoring, for example, forces you to understand a subject deeply enough to explain it clearly, which also improves your own grades. In addition, such jobs usually take place on campus, so they fit a student's schedule well. For me, a job should earn money and experience at the same time.

Problem-Solution

Question 4

Imagine a student is working many hours and his grades are falling. What should he do?

Useful phrases: I think he should... ยท If that's impossible, ... ยท ... has to stay the priority

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I think he should reduce his hours first, before the situation becomes serious. Many employers who hire students are actually flexible, especially during exam periods, so an honest conversation may solve the problem quickly. If that's impossible, he could look for a campus job with shorter shifts. Studying has to stay the priority, because a degree lasts a lifetime, while a part-time job is only temporary.
