Interview: Music

Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.

Preference

Question 1

What kind of music do you like, and when do you usually listen to it?

Useful phrases: I mostly listen to... ยท Without making me sleepy ยท Different situations call for different sounds

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I mostly listen to calm instrumental music and soft pop, especially while studying or traveling. Lyrics distract me when I read, so instrumental pieces help me concentrate without making me sleepy. On weekends, though, I switch to energetic music with friends, because it completely changes the mood of a room. For me, music is a tool: different situations genuinely call for different sounds.

Opinion

Question 2

Some schools have reduced music classes to spend more time on subjects like math and science. Do you think this is a good idea?

Useful phrases: I don't think it's a good idea, because... ยท Trains memory, patience, and listening ยท Sends the message that...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I don't think it's a good idea, because music develops parts of the mind that math classes don't reach. Learning an instrument trains memory, patience, and listening in a very direct way. Music also gives students who struggle academically another place to succeed and feel confident. Cutting it saves a little time but sends the message that only tested subjects matter, and that's a mistake.

Experience

Question 3

Tell me about any experience you have with playing an instrument or performing music.

Useful phrases: Honestly, I was terrified ยท Once I settled into the piece, ... ยท Stay calm under pressure

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I played the piano for about three years as a teenager, and I performed once at a small school concert. Honestly, I was terrified; my hands shook during the first minute. But once I settled into the piece, the fear turned into a strange kind of joy. I eventually stopped because of my studies, yet that single performance taught me how to stay calm under pressure.

Explanation

Question 4

Why do you think music is found in every culture around the world?

Useful phrases: Music is universal because... ยท From one generation to the next ยท In short, ...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I believe music is universal because it does emotional work that language alone cannot do. It helps groups celebrate, mourn, and feel united; think of weddings and funerals everywhere using songs. Music also passes stories and identity from one generation to the next, especially before writing existed. In short, humans everywhere need to express feelings together, and music is the oldest shared language for doing that.
