Interview: Movies & Media

Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.

Preference

Question 1

Do you prefer watching movies at the cinema or at home? Why?

Useful phrases: The experience itself is... ยท On the other hand, ... ยท So my rule is simple: ...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I prefer the cinema for big films, because the experience itself is part of the enjoyment. The huge screen and sound make action scenes far more exciting, and watching with an audience adds energy. At home, on the other hand, I pause whenever I want and pay much less. So my rule is simple: spectacular movies deserve the cinema, while comedies and dramas are fine at home.

Opinion

Question 2

Some people believe movies today rely too much on special effects and not enough on good stories. What do you think?

Useful phrases: There's some truth in that criticism. ยท They can't make us care about... ยท However, ... never becomes outdated

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I think there's some truth in that criticism. Impressive effects can attract audiences, but they can't make us care about characters. When I think of the films I remember years later, they're always the ones with strong stories and honest emotions. Effects age quickly, too; what looked amazing ten years ago can look ordinary now. A great story, however, never becomes outdated.

Comparison

Question 3

Which do you enjoy more: movies or television series? Why?

Useful phrases: These days I enjoy... more, because... ยท In contrast, ... ยท The downside is...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

These days I enjoy series more, because they give stories room to breathe. A movie has about two hours, so characters must change quickly, sometimes unrealistically. A series, in contrast, can develop people slowly over many episodes, and you grow attached to them. The downside is the time commitment; some series demand sixty hours. Still, for deep storytelling, I think series have a clear advantage.

Problem-Solution

Question 4

Many people spend hours every day on social media and feel it wastes their time. What can they do about it?

Useful phrases: The key is to... ยท For example, ... ยท It just needs boundaries

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I believe the key is to set limits before opening the app, not after. For example, turning off notifications removes most of the temptation to check the phone every few minutes. Setting a daily time limit in the phone's settings also helps, because the decision is made once, in advance. Social media isn't evil; it just needs boundaries, like anything else enjoyable.
