Interview: Food & Cooking

Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.

Experience

Question 1

Tell me about a dish you know how to cook well. How did you learn to make it?

Useful phrases: Which sounds simple, but... ยท She taught me during... ยท Cooking is about..., not...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I make a pretty good vegetable soup, which sounds simple but actually took practice. My grandmother taught me during one summer at her house. She never measured anything; she judged by smell and taste, and she made me repeat each step until it felt natural. What I really learned from her is that cooking is about attention, not expensive ingredients. Fresh vegetables and patience do most of the work.

Question 2

Which do you think is better: eating at home or eating at restaurants? Why?

Useful phrases: For everyday life, ... is better ยท When you cook, you control... ยท So I'd say... for ordinary days

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

For everyday life, eating at home is better, mainly because it's healthier and much cheaper. When you cook, you control the salt, oil, and portions, and a home meal can cost a third of a restaurant meal. Restaurants, though, are perfect for celebrations and for trying dishes you can't make yourself. So I'd say home cooking for ordinary days, and restaurants for special occasions.

Question 3

Some people believe traditional dishes are disappearing because of fast food. What do you think?

Useful phrases: Changing rather than disappearing ยท It's true that..., however... ยท Traditions survive when...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I think traditional food is changing rather than disappearing completely. It's true that fast food is everywhere because it's quick and cheap, especially for busy young people. However, I've also noticed a growing interest in local cooking: food festivals, family recipes shared online, and restaurants that specialize in traditional dishes. Traditions survive when people feel proud of them, and fortunately many people still do.

Problem-Solution

Question 4

Many people want to eat more healthily but say they have no time to cook. What advice would you give them?

Useful phrases: My advice is to... ยท For example, on Sunday you can... ยท ... fails from poor planning, not from...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

My advice is to prepare ingredients in advance instead of cooking from zero every night. For example, on Sunday you can wash and cut vegetables, cook rice, and grill chicken for several days. Then a healthy dinner takes ten minutes to assemble. Buying a few frozen vegetables also helps, since they're nutritious and never spoil. Healthy eating fails from poor planning, not from lack of time.
