Interview: Exercise & Health
Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.
Question 1
Describe an exercise routine or sport that you enjoy. How did you get started?
Useful phrases: I got started quite simply: ... ยท What keeps me going is... ยท Never feels like a chore

I play football with friends twice a week, and it's been my favorite exercise for years. I got started quite simply: a neighbor invited me to a casual game when I was fourteen, and I was hooked immediately. What keeps me going isn't competition, really; it's the combination of running, teamwork, and laughing with friends. Exercise that feels like play never feels like a chore.
Question 2
Some people think joining a gym is the best way to stay healthy. Do you agree?
Useful phrases: Not necessarily, because... ยท What truly matters is... ยท In fact, ...

Not necessarily, because a gym is only one of many paths to good health. What truly matters is regular movement that a person enjoys enough to continue. For some people that's a gym, but others stay perfectly healthy by walking, cycling to work, or playing sports. In fact, an expensive membership is useless if someone stops going after a month. Consistency beats location every time.
Question 3
Many people start exercising with great enthusiasm but quit after a few weeks. Why does this happen, and how can they stay motivated?
Useful phrases: People quit mainly because... ยท The solution is to... ยท ... also helps a lot, because...

I think people quit mainly because they start too aggressively and expect fast results. Someone who runs every day in week one will be sore and discouraged by week three. The solution is to begin with small, easy goals, like twenty minutes twice a week, and build up slowly. Exercising with a friend also helps a lot, because it's harder to skip when someone expects you.
Question 4
Why is regular exercise considered important not just for the body but also for the mind?
Useful phrases: In several connected ways ยท Physically, ... Psychologically, ... ยท A mental reset button

Exercise helps the mind in several connected ways. Physically, it improves sleep and increases blood flow to the brain, which sharpens concentration. Psychologically, finishing a workout gives a sense of achievement that reduces stress and anxiety. Many people, myself included, notice that problems feel smaller after a run. So exercise is really a mental reset button, not just a way to stay in shape.

Self-evaluation checklist (after each recording)
This checklist is a self-study tool. It is NOT an official TOEFL score and no browser tool can give one โ use it to find the one thing to fix next time.
