Interview: Campus Life

Four questions, one theme. For each: hear the question, answer in ~45 seconds using the recorder below, then compare with the model and run the checklist.

Experience

Question 1

What was the biggest adjustment you had to make when you started university or a new school?

Useful phrases: Honestly, the biggest adjustment was... ยท During my first month, ... ยท That experience taught me that...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

Honestly, the biggest adjustment for me was managing my own time. In high school, teachers reminded us about every deadline, but at university nobody checks on you. During my first month, I actually missed an assignment simply because I forgot about it. After that, I started using a planner and setting reminders. That experience taught me that independence sounds great, but it requires real organization.

Opinion

Question 2

Do you think universities should require all first-year students to live in campus dormitories? Why or why not?

Useful phrases: I believe they should, because... ยท When you live in a dorm, ... ยท Of course, ..., but...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

I believe they should, at least for the first year, because living on campus helps new students adjust socially and academically. When you live in a dorm, you meet people from different backgrounds, and you can reach the library or a professor's office in minutes. Of course, it can be noisy sometimes, but the friendships and support you gain are worth far more than that inconvenience.

Comparison

Question 3

Which is more valuable for students: joining academic clubs or playing on sports teams? Why?

Useful phrases: If I had to choose, I'd say... ยท For example, ... ยท Both are valuable, but...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

Both are valuable, but if I had to choose, I'd say academic clubs offer slightly more lasting benefits. They connect directly to your field, so you build skills and meet future colleagues. For example, joining a debate club improved my public speaking more than any class. Sports are wonderful for health and teamwork, of course, but academic clubs tend to open more doors after graduation.

Problem-Solution

Question 4

Many new students feel lonely during their first months on campus. What advice would you give them?

Useful phrases: My main advice would be... ยท For example, joining... ยท Don't be afraid to...

Model answer โ€” open AFTER recording yourself

My main advice would be to get involved early instead of waiting to feel comfortable. For example, joining just one club or study group gives you a regular place to meet the same people, and friendships usually grow from repeated contact. Also, don't be afraid to start conversations in class; most students feel exactly the same way. Loneliness at the beginning is normal and temporary.
