Reading Skills 3: Time Management & Test-Day Pacing
The arithmetic of the section
The current section gives roughly 30 minutes for 50 items across its task families — but it is multistage adaptive: your performance on the first stage routes you to an easier or harder second stage. Two consequences: (1) early accuracy matters more than late speed; (2) you cannot 'make up' a weak first stage by rushing the second. Pace evenly and protect accuracy early.
Per-type budgets
- Vocabulary & Reference: ~45 seconds — context decides; do not deliberate.
- Factual: ~60-75 seconds — locate, read 3 sentences, answer.
- Negative Factual: ~90 seconds — full verification of all four options.
- Inference & Rhetorical Purpose: ~75-90 seconds.
- Simplification: ~75 seconds against your part-list.
- Insert Text: ~90 seconds, hooks first.
- Prose Summary: ~2 minutes — the set's most valuable question.
- Complete the Words: ~20 seconds per word — sentence logic first, word shape second.
- Daily Life items: ~45 seconds — everyday texts are short; the traps are schedule/condition details.
The two-pass system
Pass 1: answer everything you can pin to evidence quickly. Flag (mentally) the two or three hardest. Pass 2: return with the time you banked. Never let one inference question eat three factual questions' worth of time — an unanswered easy question is the most expensive mistake in the section.
Training against the clock
Untimed accuracy first (Easy/Intermediate), then timed single passages, then the full simulation on this site with its visible timer. After every timed set, your error analysis separates genuine comprehension misses from time-management ones — they need different medicine.
