Step 76: I Do Agree!

Strong feelings — Emphasis with do; so / such in depth

📖 Read — Strong Feelings Day

“You never help me with English!” Jack teases his sister. She looks up, surprised. “That's not true! I DO help you — I helped you yesterday, and I do correct your homework every week!” Their mother laughs from the kitchen. “She does work hard for you, Jack. And you DID promise to wash the dishes!”

Some sentences need muscles. Emma had such a wonderful day that she couldn't stop smiling: the surprise party was so perfect, her friends were so kind, and there was so much cake that everyone took some home. “I do love my friends,” she said, “from the bottom of my heart.”

🧩 Grammar — Emphasis with Do + So / Such in Depth

To make a positive sentence STRONGER, add do / does / did before the base verb and stress it when you speak: I DO like it! She DOES work hard. We DID try! (Only in positive statements — questions and negatives already have their do.) Then intensify results: so + adjective/adverb (so kind, so fast), so much/many/little/few + noun, and such + (a/an) + adjective + noun (such a wonderful day, such kind friends) — usually with a 'that' result.

I DO / she DOES / we DID + base verb · so + adj · such + (a) + adj + noun
  • I do believe you!
  • He does know the answer — ask him!
  • It was such a surprise that I cried.
  • She ran so fast that nobody could catch her.

I DO help you, and she DOES work hard! It was such a wonderful day that we smiled all evening — so much joy, from the bottom of my heart.

🎤 Your turn to speak

Defend yourself with emphasis: make one I DO, one she DOES, and one we DID sentence — then describe a great day with one such…that and one so…that.

Say it out loud three times. Even better: record it on your phone and listen — your ear is your best teacher.

✍️ Your turn to write

Write 5 sentences with strong feelings: two emphatic do/does/did sentences and two so/such result sentences.

People say I'm quiet, but I DO have strong opinions! My grandmother does tell the best stories. Last summer we did visit the Grand Canyon, and it was such a huge, beautiful place that we stood in silence. The sunset was so orange that the rocks looked like fire.
