Step 67: The Earlier Past
Deep past — Past perfect continuous
📖 Read — Signs of What Had Been Happening
When the Miller family returned home on Sunday night, the kitchen told a story. The floor was muddy, the dog was soaked and quiet in the corner, and a chair lay on its side. The poor dog had been barking for hours — the neighbors said so. It had been raining all afternoon, and water had come in under the back door.
Dad's face was pale. He had been driving for six hours without a break, and his eyes were red. Mom was relieved to be home. “Well,” she sighed, “the dog had been waiting by the door the whole time. It missed us!” Some past actions leave footprints — and the past perfect continuous reads them.
🧩 Grammar — Past Perfect Continuous — Duration Before a Past Moment
The past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) shows an action that was in progress for a duration BEFORE a past moment or event: When we arrived, the dog had been barking for hours. It's also perfect for explaining a past STATE by its cause: His eyes were red because he had been driving all day. The ground was wet — it had been raining. Compare: past perfect simple = completed before (had finished), continuous = in progress before (had been working).
- She had been studying for hours when the lights went out.
- The ground was wet because it had been raining.
- He had been waiting since noon when she finally called.
- They had been living in Denver before they moved to Austin.

When I opened the door, the apartment was a disaster. The cat had been playing with the toilet paper all afternoon — it was everywhere! My brother had been cooking, and smoke had been filling the kitchen for an hour. Flour covered the floor because he had been baking since noon. I just laughed: some evenings tell their own story.
