Step 47: The Man Who…
Describing precisely — Relative clauses: who, which, that
📖 Read — Tell Me Exactly Who
Ethan is describing people and things to his new friend David. “The man who lives next door is a doctor. The woman who teaches us English is Miss Taylor. And the boy that sits behind me is Tom — he's the one who makes everyone laugh.”
“What about things?” asks David. “The book which is on the table is mine,” says Ethan. “And this is the phone that I bought last year. A phone is a thing that helps you talk to the world. Oh — and a neighbor is a person who lives near you. Now you try!”
🧩 Grammar — Relative Clauses — Who, Which, That
Join two sentences into one with a relative pronoun: who for people, which for things, that for people AND things (very common in American English). The pronoun does the job of the second subject — don't repeat it: The man who lives next door (NOT 'who he lives').
- The teacher who helps us is kind.
- The book that I read was great.
- A cashier is a person who works in a shop.
- The house which stands on the corner is ours.
🏗️ Key structures
