Step 44: Dreams and Wishes
Imaginary situations — Second conditional
📖 Read — If I Had a Million Dollars…
The friends are dreaming at lunch. “If I won the lottery,” says Jack, “I would buy a house in Hawaii and surf every day!” Emma laughs. “If I had a superpower, I would fly. No more buses!”
Tom is more serious. “If I were rich, I would build a school for kids who can't pay. And if I were you, Ethan, I'd practice English even more — your dream job is close!” Ethan smiles. “You're right. If I spoke perfect English today, I would apply for that job in New York tomorrow. Well — dream big, and work hard!”
🧩 Grammar — Second Conditional — Imaginary Situations
For IMAGINARY situations (not real now), use the second conditional: if + past simple, would + verb — If I had a million dollars, I would travel. The past here is NOT about time — it's about 'not real'. Special form: If I were you… (were for every person) when you give advice: If I were you, I'd study more.
- If I won the lottery, I would buy a house in Hawaii.
- If she lived in New York, she would walk to work.
- If I were you, I'd call her.
- What would you do if you had more time?
