Step 107: The Complaint
Intellectual English — Science and abstract vocabulary
📖 Read — Julia Writes to the Airline
“Subject: Request for refund — Flight 214, March 3. Dear Customer Service Team, On March 3, I purchased two tickets on Flight 214 from Denver to Chicago (booking reference JK4821). The flight was canceled without notice, and my luggage arrived four days later. As a result, I missed my sister's graduation and had to purchase replacement clothing. I would like a full refund of $386 and compensation for the delayed luggage, as guaranteed under your own policy. I have attached my receipt and boarding pass. I would appreciate a response within 14 days. Yours faithfully, Julia Bennett.”
Read the skeleton: FACTS with dates and numbers → IMPACT (what it cost her) → REQUEST (specific remedy, not anger) → EVIDENCE attached → DEADLINE, polite and firm. The canceled flight was the last straw after two earlier delays — but the letter never shouts. In consumer English, the calmest letter wins: companies answer facts, deadlines, and policies — not feelings.
🧩 Grammar — Advanced Complaint Letters — Firm, Factual, Unbeatable
A winning complaint has five bones: 1. Facts (dates, numbers, reference codes — no adjectives yet). 2. The failure in business verbs: was canceled, arrived damaged, was charged twice, failed to arrive. 3. Impact: As a result, I missed… / This caused significant inconvenience. 4. The remedy, requested precisely: I would like a full refund / a replacement / an apology in writing. 5. A polite deadline + consequence: I would appreciate a response within 14 days; if I do not hear from you, I will contact the consumer protection office. Firmness ladder: disappointed → unacceptable → I will escalate. Never insults — evidence is louder.
