Disagreeing with a Friend (and Staying Friends)

Jess wants the new superhero movie; Tyler wants literally anything else. Watch how they disagree: acknowledge first ('I get that, but…'), tease lightly, and trade — never attack. The friendship survives; so does the evening. · B1 · Role-Play

How to practice: first listen to the whole dialogue. Then play BOTH roles out loud — or take one role and answer the other from memory. When it flows, record the full dialogue below.

Jess Okay, Friday movie night. I'm thinking the new superhero one — it just came out.

Tyler Ooh. Hmm. Honestly? I'm kind of superhero-ed out. There have been, like, nine this year.

Jess Fair enough, but this one's supposed to be different — more of a thriller, less… explosions.

Tyler That's what they said about the last one. And the one before that.

Jess True, true. Okay, what would YOU pick, then?

Tyler There's that mystery film everyone's talking about — the one on the train? Ninety minutes, no homework needed.

Jess See, mysteries stress me out. I spend the whole movie suspecting the wrong person.

Tyler That's the FUN part. Tell you what — mystery this Friday, superhero next Friday, and I'll even buy the popcorn as compensation.

Jess Popcorn AND the big soda?

Tyler Don't push your luck. …Fine. Big soda.

Jess Deal. But if the detective did it, you owe me two sodas.

Record yourself, play it back, and compare with the model. Recordings stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Your task

Disagree your way through three mini-scenes out loud (30–45 seconds each): a friend wants Italian, you want sushi; a friend wants the beach, you want the mountains; a friend loves a song you can't stand. Rules: acknowledge first ('I get that, but…'), give one real reason, and end each with a trade ('Tell you what —…').
