Think Fast: Spontaneous Responses

Real fluency is unscripted. These five prompts arrive with no preparation — the model answers show the survival technique: buy two seconds with a frame ('Oh, that's easy —', 'Let me think…'), commit to ONE idea, give one reason, stop. Your task below turns this into a timed drill. · C1 · Interview

How to practice: answer each question out loud in 30–60 seconds BEFORE reading the model answer. Then compare ideas and expressions — and answer again, better. Record one full round.

Q: No preparation: if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who and why?

Model answer — study it, then say your own:

Oh — my grandfather, no contest. He died before I was old enough to ask real questions, and from what my mother says, he had stories for days. I'd just listen and take notes.

Q: Quick: what's a skill you wish you'd learned at fifteen?

Model answer — study it, then say your own:

Let me think… cooking, honestly. Not fancy cooking — just feeding myself well without thinking. It would've saved me a decade of terrible student food and, frankly, a lot of money.

Q: Defend this: mornings are better than evenings.

Model answer — study it, then say your own:

Easily defended. Mornings are the only time the world is quiet and nothing has gone wrong yet. Evenings are just mornings with consequences.

Q: What's something you believed at twenty that you don't believe now?

Model answer — study it, then say your own:

Hmm. That talent was a thing you either had or you didn't. Turns out almost everything I admire in people is just practice that nobody saw. Slightly annoying, mostly encouraging.

Q: Last one: describe your perfect Sunday in twenty seconds.

Model answer — study it, then say your own:

Slow start, no alarm. Coffee, a long walk somewhere green, lunch with people I like, and — this is key — absolutely no feeling that Monday is watching. That's it. Simple on purpose.

Your task

The drill: set a timer. Read each question, allow yourself TWO seconds, then answer for 30–45 seconds using the survival frame: buy time (one phrase max) → ONE idea → ONE reason or example → stop cleanly. Record all five. Fluency here means starting — not being perfect.
