It's Complicated: Giving Nuanced Opinions

C1 speakers rarely say 'I agree' or 'I disagree' naked. They qualify: 'to some extent', 'it depends on…', 'on balance'. Listen to Maya and Daniel discuss remote work — and notice how almost every opinion arrives with a shade of gray. · C1 · Discussion

How to practice: listen to the whole discussion first. Notice how the speakers agree, disagree, hedge and interrupt politely. Then take one role and speak it out loud; finally, record your OWN opinion on the same topic for one full minute.

Maya So — remote work. Are you for it or against it?

Daniel Honestly? It depends. For deep, focused work, home is unbeatable. But for brainstorming… I don't know, something gets lost.

Maya That's fair, to some extent. Though I'd argue the brainstorming problem is more about bad meetings than about location.

Daniel Hm, you may have a point. Still — new employees, for instance — how do they absorb the culture through a screen?

Maya They don't, fully. That's a real cost. On balance, though, I'd say flexibility wins — provided managers actually manage.

Daniel Provided — that's the key word, isn't it? The model isn't the problem; the management is.

Maya Exactly. So we're not really pro- or anti-remote. We're pro-good-management.

Daniel Ha — put that on a poster. Though, between you and me, I still miss the office coffee machine.

Maya See, that's the most honest argument you've made all day.

Record yourself, play it back, and compare with the model. Recordings stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Your task

Give YOUR nuanced opinion on one of these: 'Social media does more harm than good' or 'University is worth the money'. Speak for 90 seconds. Rules: qualify at least three times (it depends, to some extent, on balance, provided that), concede one point to the other side, and only then conclude.
