More Than Books. The modern public library is changing. Alongside the quiet reading rooms, many libraries now have makerspaces with 3D printers, sewing machines, and tools that members can borrow. In Denver, the central library lends everything from laptops to gardening tools. 'People come for many reasons now,' says head librarian Priya Nair. 'Books are still the heart of the library, but not the whole body.'

A Place to Work and Meet. Libraries are becoming the free 'third place' between home and office. For the whole community, the library is the one warm, free room that is open to everyone. Students fill the study rooms during exam weeks, while parents meet in the children's corner and freelancers work at long tables with free Wi-Fi. Many libraries have added small cafés, so visitors can stay for hours with coffee and a laptop. On rainy afternoons, the building is full by three o'clock, and the café sells out of soup.

Digital, But Human. Almost every library now offers e-books, online classes, and digital archives. Some are even testing book-delivery robots in their halls. But librarians are not worried about their jobs. 'Machines can carry books,' Nair says, 'but they cannot help a child choose the story that changes her life. That part will always be human.' Membership is growing fastest among teenagers, who come for the study rooms, stay for the workshops, and — librarians happily report — still leave with books.
