The American R — the Sound of America

B2 · American Speech · Rhotic R: car, hard, teacher, four — R is always pronounced

The single most American sound: a strong, growling R that is ALWAYS pronounced — at the start, middle, and end of words. British-style English drops R after vowels; American English keeps every one: car, hard, teacher, four, here, care. If you want to sound American, start here.

Step 1 — Notice

The American R is made by bunching the tongue back — the tip points up slightly but touches NOTHING — while the lips round a little. Vowels before R change their color: her /ɝ/, car /ɑr/, for /ɔr/, here /ɪr/, care /ɛr/. Never trill it, never tap it, and never drop it at the end of a word: 'teacher' without the final R is not American.

Step 2 — Listen

AI-generated American voice. Natural first, then slow. Listen as many times as you need.

car

The R colors the whole vowel: /kɑr/.

hard

Strong R in the middle-end.

teacher

Final -er = a soft R growl.

four

/fɔr/ — R fully present.

The teacher drove her car.

Three Rs in one sentence — all pronounced.

Step 3 — Notice the Difference

Careful

teacher (non-rhotic: 'teech-uh', no R)

car — 'kar' with a growl

Same story for hard, four, here, care.

Step 4 — Repeat & Record

Say each model out loud, right after the voice. Then record yourself saying the target line: car

🎙 Practice recorder

Record yourself, play it back, and compare with the model. Recordings stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Step 5 — Compare & Self-Check

Play your recording from Step 4. Then play the model again. No scores — just honest ears. Tick what you truly did:

Step 6 — Shadow

The text starts hidden. Listen first, then reveal it, then speak with the voice — same rhythm, half a second behind.

Her brother drove the car to the harbor.
