Sentence Stress — Content Words Carry the Message

B1 · Sentence Stress · Stress nouns, verbs, adjectives — shrink the little words

Native speakers do NOT pronounce every word with equal strength. In 'I WANT the RED one', two words tower over the rest. Content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs) get the stress; function words (the, a, to, and) shrink. Learn this and both your listening and your speaking jump a level.

Step 1 — Notice

Try this experiment: cover the small words and read only the stressed ones — WANT, RED. The message survives! That's because English packs meaning into content words and treats function words as quick connectors. When every word gets equal stress, listeners must work much harder — it sounds like a robot reading a list. Unequal stress is not sloppy; it IS the system.

Step 2 — Listen

AI-generated American voice. Natural first, then slow. Listen as many times as you need.

I want the red one.

WANT and RED tower; 'the' almost vanishes.

She bought a new car yesterday.

BOUGHT … CAR … YESterday — three peaks, valleys between.

The students are studying in the library.

STUdents … STUdying … LIbrary — the little words rush past.

Step 3 — Notice the Difference

Careful

I — want — the — red — one. (every word equal and separate)

→

Natural American

I WANT the RED one.

Same words, new shape: two peaks, quick valleys.

Careful

She — bought — a — new — car. (flat)

→

Natural American

She BOUGHT a new CAR.

The article 'a' shrinks to a schwa — barely a sound at all.

Step 5 — Compare & Self-Check

Play your recording from Step 4. Then play the model again. No scores — just honest ears. Tick what you truly did:

Step 6 — Shadow

The text starts hidden. Listen first, then reveal it, then speak with the voice — same rhythm, half a second behind.

I wanted the red one, not the blue one.
