Can vs Can't — Stress Carries the Meaning

A2 · Sentence Stress · Positive 'can' shrinks; negative 'can't' stays strong

The most misunderstood pair in American English. In 'I can go', the word 'can' almost vanishes — a quick, weak 'kən'. In 'I can't go', 'can't' is loud and strong. Americans don't listen for the final 't' (often it's barely there) — they listen for the STRESS.

Step 1 — Notice

Positive can = weak form: short, fast, vowel reduced to schwa (kən). Negative can't = strong form: full vowel, clear stress, even when the /t/ is swallowed into a throat-stop. So the rule for your ear: strong CAN'T = negative; weak little kən = positive. And the rule for your voice: shrink your positive 'can', and give 'can't' its full power.

Step 2 — Listen

AI-generated American voice. Natural first, then slow. Listen as many times as you need.

I can swim.

Hear how small 'can' is — kən SWIM.

I can't swim.

CAN'T is the biggest word in the sentence.

She can come at six.

Weak kən again — the stress lands on COME and SIX.

He can't come at six.

Strong CAN'T — impossible to miss.

Step 3 — Notice the Difference

Careful

I can go. (slow textbook form, full vowel)

→

Natural American

I kən GO.

Positive: 'can' shrinks to a quick kən; the main verb takes the stress.

Careful

I can't go. (careful form)

→

Natural American

I CAN'T go.

Negative: 'can't' never shrinks. Its strength IS the negative signal.
