TOEFL Test Strategy, Note-Taking & Time Management
Time management
Reading: ~35 seconds average per item across the module — mark and move; never donate 3 minutes to one question.
Listening: the audio sets your pace; use the question time to pre-read options for the NEXT item when possible.
Writing: Email ≈ 7 minutes, Discussion ≈ 10 minutes — reserve the last minute of each for a quick error scan.
Speaking: preparation time is short by design; a simple structure said fluently beats a complex one said haltingly.
Note-taking
Take notes for Listening only (and briefly for integrated ideas): main point, 2-3 details, contrasts, numbers, names.
Use symbols and abbreviations: → (leads to), ↑ increase, w/ with, b/c because.
Never transcribe: if you are writing full sentences, you are not listening.
Organize the page by speaker/topic shifts — draw a line when the topic changes.
Test strategy
The adaptive rule: the first module decides your ceiling — give it full focus.
No penalty for wrong answers: answer everything, always.
Eliminate two options, then choose — disciplined guessing is a skill.
Mistake analysis beats volume: after every practice set, classify each error (knowledge, reading/listening slip, time, trap) and fix the pattern, not the item.
